![]() This drove Berry to turn to tourists to make money. While the ore was rich, the amount of ore was small and mining in the area proved only briefly profitable. Berry and his crew built a 3.0 mile long trail to the mine - one of the finest trails built in Grand Canyon during the pioneer period. There in 1890, Pete Berry and other miners discovered copper and began digging the Last Chance Mine. Grandview is also a popular stop because it is also the location of a historic hotel that no longer exists and the upper portion of an old copper mining establishment. The vista point offers magnificent panoramic views of Grand Canyon and the Colorado River below, including prominent buttes like Rama Shrine, Krishna Shine, Vishnu Shrine, and Shiva Temple. Sitting at 7,399 feet elevation, Grandview Point is a scenic overlook on Desert View Drive in Grand Canyon National Park and the trailhead for the historic Grandview Trail. Each scenic vista point along the South Rim of Grand Canyon offers unique views of the vast canyon from improved observation areas with interpretive signs, historic photos, and occasionally benches to relax and enjoy the incredible scenery. After more than 50 years as one of West Virginia’s most popular state parks, Grandview was transferred to the National Park Service in 1990.Grandview Point is one of six improved scenic overlooks between Grand Canyon Village and Desert View Point and trust me, you’re going to want to stop at every single one. The children’s playgrounds, recreation area, and additional walkways were built from 1961 to 1964. Construction began in 1960 on the 1200-seat Cliffside Amphitheater. The Civilian Conservation Corps built roads, shelters, and a picnic area, all still in use today. In 1939, the state of West Virginia purchased 52 acres of land at Grandview to develop a day use park. Grandview was originally a part of the West Virginia State Park system. The Grandview section of the park includes overlooks of the New River, a visitor center (open seasonally), five hiking trails, ranger-led walks and talks, summer outdoor dramas, and picnic areas with playgrounds. The exact bloom times are not always consistent year to year, so check with a ranger at one of our visitor centers or check our facebook page for updates. The purple Catawba rhododendrons bloom in mid May, while the white great rhododendrons bloom in July. Grandview is a great place to see the spectacular displays of Catawba rhododendrons that bloom here every spring. Don't miss the views from Turkey Spur Overlook, and be sure to walk the woodland trails. From here you see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where the first coal was shipped out of the gorge in 1873. From Main Overlook visitors can also get a glimpse of some of the gorge's unique cultural history. ![]() On a clear day you can see directly into the heart of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, including seven miles of the New River and its watershed. From 1400 feet above the river at Main Overlook, visitors are rewarded with one of the most outstanding views in the park.
